A few years ago at Bryn Mawr RV Resort in St. Augustine, Fla., to see Widespread Panic at the St. Aug Amphitheater, a gust of wind blew the RV door closed – locking the RV and F150 keys inside.
While we waited for AAA to come unlock the truck so we could fetch the spare RV key inside, we wondered how we could make such a freshman mistake. Hey, stuff happens. At least the roadside assistance magician got into the truck like a pro. But it could have been worse. At a remote music festival or in a rush to boogie home, roadside assistance could have taken hours – or not come at all. Then what would we have done…?

Time was when “tools” for a vehicle meant jumper cables and maybe a lug wrench tucked beneath the spare tire’s cover in the trunk. Yet, when deciding to put together a tool box for a pickup truck and camper, what additional tools are must-have necessities? On first blush, there’s the cables and lug wrench, and besides zip ties, duct tape, a couple different screwdrivers, a pair of channel locks, an adjustable wrench, and some wire cutters. But what else should be included?

The first thing I did when I learned the stars had aligned and I would be heading to the LOCKN’ Music Festival in rural Virginia, in early September, was check the line-up. Man, my first festival would be a doozie – The Allman Brothers band (on their farewell tour, no less), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Umphrey’s McGee, and a host of other acts would be playing over four days. Equally important as the tunes was the totes. I’d be car camping. What should I bring…?
