Getting Past Those Damn Fugly RVs – Outside & In

RVers love our rigs. But sometimes, the paint jobs and interior decor are enough to make your head swirl as you reach for the Zofran. What’s a camper to do? Lord knows we’re not helping nudge the industry away from its tried-and-tired experiment with wavy designs and archaic color schemes. So let’s explore a bit what got us to the point of Pantone colors seemingly custom-chosen for hiding a 40-foot RV in the forest so even a park ranger hunting boondockers through the trees would be stymied.

First, about RVers…  Spend some time in a campground or on RV and camping social media sites (or almost any social media, for that matter), and one thing becomes pretty clear pretty quickly: we RVers can be warm, welcoming, and willing to lend a hand or serve as your spotter when backing into your site (even if they break out the smartphone to capture the hilarity).

And we can be a surly, hard-to-please lot.

Case in point: I posted a photo recently about my pretty, new wind chimes.

JL Audio, Airstream Turning Up RV Sound Systems

Today’s RVs have almost every conceivable creature comfort and custom creation. From man cave to she shed to the perfect vehicle for roadtripping to the campground or music festival scene, they’ve been outfitted with finishes designed to bring the home or retreat on the road. One component that always has been woefully missing: Better sound. Hey, RV Industry, what’s the deal? We drop $20,000, $50,000, even $100,000 or more on a travel trailer or RV, and the stereo system seems something out of a 1960s family sedan. Boats for years have had stellar sound systems. Why not RVs?

Sure, some people insist RVs are for camping – and the ambient sounds should be tuned into birds and crickets and wind blowing through the trees and all that. Fair enough.

Camping with Bluetooth Speakers: Small Size, Big Sound, Ultra-Portable

Whether docked at an RV campground or camping at the music festival fairgrounds, for many of us, tunes are essential. Some RVers use the camper’s stereo; car campers often turn up the vehicle’s sound. We’ve used the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio for several years, getting such good sound that neighboring campers often enjoy our output. But for those who want more full, rich, and dynamic sound in a portable speaker – all off your smartphone – today’s smaller Bluetooth speakers can fill the campsite or trail with audio bliss.

New Camping Products For Roadtrips and Music Festivals

RoadtripMojo spent a few hours at the West Palm Beach RV Show last weekend scouting new rigs and products for the campsite and music festival fair grounds. We dig walking RV shows. Did one a month ago. There’ll be another in a month or two. Yeah, we’re kinda quirky that way.

But we’re on a hunt for the latest or time-tested innovations that we unearth at these shows. Some products are new. Some are new to us. Some won’t jazz tent campers. Most are bright shiny objects that piqued our interest – and may turn heads among other RVers, campers, and festival goers. Best of all, most are buy today / use today simple (OK, maybe not new rubber for the RV, but read on and you’ll see…).
