RV owners like to invite family and friends to join them on their journeys. Then they plop their guests in a converted dinette or the sofabed and say, “G’night.” Come morning, their slumber is invaded with light and the patter of passersby. Privacy? What a quaint notion.
What if the lodging could regain that privacy?
With Mr. Charlie the travel trailer, we recently installed a tapestry to restore some privacy, and reflective insulation to repel the sun’s light and heat. Here’s how we did it…
First, we measured the space. The interior width of the dinette slide out measures 88 inches wide and roughly 70 inches high. Being avid festival goers, we had a tapestry or two to spare.
We went to Bed Bath and Beyond to buy a decorative tension curtain rod in brushed bronze to match Charlie’s brown interior. We also bought a 10-pack of bronze clip-on curtain rings to hang the tapestry.
We also picked up a batch of Command Strips – the adhesive strip of the heavens. The tension rod was fairly secure, but the Command Strips would add some security and peace of mind. To further secure the rod, I screwed a hook into the dinette ceiling. The rod rests gently on the hook, but can be pulled out to allow the curtain rings to pass by to enclose the dinette.
The light and heat that shines through the windows can be oppressive – and annoying. So Barry bought a roll of Reflectix reflective roll insulation. We cut pieces to fit the three windows and secured it to the window frames with – what else – Command Strips. It also adds a bit more privacy from the outside in.
The tapestry now is a permanent fixture in Charlie’s dinette. It is neatly tucked to the side when en route or entertaining. But when it’s time to hit the hay, pull the tapestry over – and privacy is achieved.
