Heating the RV Against Bitter Cold

Imagine being in your RV anywhere north of Florida when December’s bomb cyclone hit. With temps plunging below zero in many areas, gas furnace could keep you warm. But even many “all season” RVs aren’t designed for bitter cold.

How can you improve your RV’s thermal dynamics to make the bitter cold less bitter? We were at Suwannee Hulaween music festival one year when the early morning temps were in the 30s. We flipped on the furnace and were comfy in no time. Heck, it was in the 70s by early afternoon. That’s Florida.

What about Montana, where sustained freezing temps can come any time – fall, winter, spring. Mother Nature lives to no schedule.

FloydFest Pumps the Music Festival Heartbeat

You could excuse Sam Calhoun if he gloats a bit about the success FloydFest Odyssey enjoyed earlier this year. Fresh off the fear of the pandemic, the festival, which had gone quiet like almost all others in 2020, returned loud, proud and pretty damn safe. Definitely worth boasting about.

While other fests remained locked down or overly cautious, Calhoun’s show – “FloydFest Odyssey 2021” – went on. Fans enjoyed Music. Magic. Mountains. in the hills of Virginia.

The odyssey didn’t end after the show. It seemed to endure after the closing act, like notes carrying through the hills of Virginia. One of the first to cancel in 2020, they were among the first to return with a “traditional” (no pods, no distancing) fest in 2021.

“The afterglow of getting through Odyssey is wild,” says Calhoun, producer with promoter Across-the-Way Productions.

A DIYer at heart, knew bringing in a pro to help install the right solar array on his Grand Design Reflections 150 Series fifth-wheel would smooth the process. He hired Expert Mobile Solar LLC in Melbourne, Florida (check out his Facebook). The proprietor Jeff sent Barry a list of panels, batteries and other components to choose from.

Camping Off-the-Grid? ‘A Solar System’ for RV Boondocking

For most RV campers, “boondocking” is a mythical form of camping. Disconnected, off the grid, separated from other campers – just you and your crew deep in the state or national park or out-of-the-way getaway where no power, water or sewer lines can reach. Just like the pioneers used to do. But glampers aren’t pioneering woodsfolk, unless the pioneers had their own memory foam bed, and shower, and fridge, and solid roof and door to keep out the elements and creatures. Modern boondockers want the creature comforts only power can deliver.

Enter solar power.
